I had the honor of inheriting a selection of beautiful materials and tools from a most beloved and missed family friend and artist, Jasna Guy. One of the many treasures was a box full of gold and silver leaf. A material I had never thought to use or even consider until the day I got my 20-week pregnancy ultrasound. The strange and wonderful sight of this little fetus moving in my body and captured on the screen got my creative gears turning. I realized how well the ultrasound image shows the ambiguity of where the fetus begins and the birthing body ends. The idea of painting the image with clear glue then brushing on silver leaf seemed like the perfect way to investigate this ambiguity even further. The drawing process, much like pregnancy itself, was a practice in letting go of expectations and control.
